Roo

Meet Roo, a 3 yr old, 12 lb, smooth coated, blue dapple, female dachshund, located in San Francisco. Roo is a beautiful, very sweet, loving and playful girl. She loves her people and loves to cuddle and snuggle. She enjoys playing with her squeakies, stuffies, balls and sticks. She sleeps in her dog bed or the big bed. She is good with cats, most other dogs, adults and older children (10+). She is leash trained and loves to go for car rides. Roo is being rehomed as she is a special needs girl and her owners both work outside the home and no longer have the time to devote to her continued recovery.  She ruptured a disc in her back and was diagnosed with IVDD level 5 with no deep pain in March 2025. They got her into surgery within 24 hours of the incident, but given the severity of the injury, the vets do not know if she will walk again. They have been on a diligent physical therapy regiment and Roo has gained significant strength in her back half, but unfortunately do not yet see clear evidence of neural reconnectivity in her back legs. It is believed that, with continued time and physical therapy there is a chance Roo will walk again, but due to their work schedules, do not have the time to continue caring for her the way she needs. Any potential adopters would need to be retired or in a work from home situation as Roo is incontinent and needs a human to "express her bladder" 4 to 5 times a day in order for her to urinate. Bladder expression means to press gently on her tummy where her bladder is so that she can start peeing. Failure to do so can cause bladder infections (i.e., diapers are not a viable solution here). That said, Roo does have enough sensation to tell when she has to go to the bathroom and will communicate this by whining at the back door. She will have small accidents around the home as she can "leak" when excited (which they hope is a sign that she is regaining some control and redeveloping some of those reflexes). Roo can move around the home surprisingly well and her new owners can opt to either continue the physical therapy or get her wheels for outdoor walks. She does not need specific vet care and is not on any medications, just TLC. Roo is current on vaccinations, spayed, and micro chipped. This is a very sweet girl that just needs a caring, soft place to land.
