Adoption Policies

If you have never adopted through a rescue organization before, you might be unfamiliar with how rescue groups operate. There are some things you should know right first:
Everyone in DRNC is a volunteer; we have no paid staff and no central office. While we love doing our rescue work, we all have our regular lives. We work very hard with our adopters, but please don't assume that if you apply to adopt a dog today, you will be able to have the perfect dog today!
Some people find the adoption procedures of rescue groups to be "too much trouble." DRNC rescuers want to place each rescue dog in a happy home, and we also want to help you find the right dachshund for you. Our goal is to place our dogs in their forever homes, and that takes some work! To ensure that a good match is made, we do ask for references and a home visit, and we ask that you complete our adoption application.
FYI:
We are looking for the best possible homes for our dogs, which will typically take a little time. We gather as many applications as possible, so we have several to choose from. Adoption Applications are NOT approved on a first come, first served basis.
What to expect during the adoption process:
Unless otherwise indicated, each dog adopted will be ...

- Everyone who wants to adopt a dog must complete the Adoption Application.
- No dog will be adopted out as a gift. The person who will own the dog must complete the Adoption Application and go through the process.
- WE DO NOT SHIP OUR DOGS! All adopters must be within a reasonable driving distance of DRNC because, if for any reason the adoption does not work out, we must be able to get the dog back.
- Foster homes have the first right of adoption on any dog they are fostering, if they are deemed to be the best home for the dog.
- We reserve the right to refuse to adopt a dog to an individual or family we consider to be unsuitable for the dog.

- If you wish to adopt the dog you will pay the adoption fee and begin the trial period.
- All adopters will be required to sign an Adoption Agreement.
Unless otherwise indicated, each dog adopted will be ...
- Up to date on Rabies and DHLPC vaccinations
- Spayed or neutered, except in the case where medical issues prevent surgery
- Micro-chipped
- 30 days of Pet Insurance
Spay/Neuter Policy:
Dachshund Rescue of Northern California (DRNC) is committed to spaying or neutering all companion dogs. All dogs in our rescue will be spayed or neutered before they are placed for adoption, to prevent any possibility that the dog will be used for breeding after it has left our rescue. If the dog is a puppy that is too young to undergo the surgery, the adopter will be required to sign DRNC’s Spay/Neuter Agreement and Addendum to the Adoption Agreement. Additionally, the adopter will be required to post a spay/neuter deposit, in addition to the adoption fee. The Spay/Neuter Deposit will be refunded to the adopter once all the terms and conditions of the Spay/Neuter Agreement are complied with.
Failure to comply with the terms and conditions of the Spay/Neuter Agreement will be considered a breach of the Agreement, and the adopter will be required to return the dog to DRNC and will NOT be entitled to a refund of the Adoption Fee or the Spay/Neuter Deposit. Additionally, we will not place any of our rescue dogs in homes having intact dogs, unless a veterinarian has determined that the intact dog in the home has a medical condition that precludes its being spayed or neutered, or unless the potential adopter is a reputable breeder/shower of dogs that must be intact to compete in sanctioned events.
