History of DRNC
Marlena "Monti" Markel
founded DRNC in 2001.
Here is her story:
Dachshund Rescue of Northern California came into being, really, by accident. We had three little dachshunds of our own when a friend called and told me about a sad looking puppy mill mom on the internet who was being rehomed by the breeder. My friend was frantically looking for someone to take her in and knew how much I loved piebalds. She was a very shy little girl that I still have. She never really adjusted well enough to be adopted out. After we got her, I saw a little red boy on craigslist and took him. Soon, people were finding us and asking us for help with dogs they couldn't keep or didn't want. I took them at first because I was afraid no one else would, but then I realized there were people who wanted them, so it was just a matter of letting those people know these dogs were available. We borrowed an application from a rescue friend and suddenly we were a Rescue!
That was 9 years and hundreds of dogs ago. It feels good to know that many dogs are happy and cared for today because we helped them find new families. We still have our first rescues. They are part of my geriatric ward - 4 sixteen year old dachshunds!
I recently lost my first rescue dog Gracie. She was a beautiful little girl who loved to run and play at the beach. I had her cremated and will have her with me forever.
